Family Law

Families can be the best of things and we often say ‘family comes first’. Unfortunately, families can also run into problems. BBNM Law has experienced staff waiting to help you to find a solution for any legal problem that concerns you and your family. You can find details of our family law experts here.

It doesn’t matter how simple or complicated your problem is, we want to work with you to find a solution.

These are some of the things that we can assist you with:

  • Divorce & separation
  • Prenuptial agreements
  • Cohabitation
  • Financial settlement after divorce
  • Arrangements for children: who they live and spend time with
  • Change of name
  • Social services intervention
  • Injunctions (non-molestation orders) against ex-partners or other family members if you think you are vulnerable to abuse
  • Surrogacy arrangements

So how does it work?

It is you, the client, who comes first. You tell us about your problem (we call that giving us 'instruction') and we will advise you about options available to improve things. You are always in charge of your case and our staff have years of experience in making sure that clients are well advised and that their instructions are listened to and acted upon.

One family law solicitor will deal with your case wherever possible so that you can get to know the person helping you and develop a good working relationship. Of course, sometimes it might be necessary for a colleague to assist but if that happens we will tell you why. Everyone involved in your case will work together to ensure the best outcome in the shortest time possible. We respect the confidentiality of all of our clients.

Our staff are well known and highly respected at court and by solicitors in other firms. Our lawyers have worked to gain professional accreditation in family law from the Law Society and from Resolution, an organisation that works to promote the solving of family problems in a non-confrontational way and by agreement wherever possible.

If it is necessary to go to court and your problem is particularly complicated we have links with some of the country’s top barristers and we can ask them to help.

Although our offices are in the North East of England we have clients across the country and abroad. If you can’t come to our office for a meeting we can take your instructions by telephone or by video call. This means that if you are working or living abroad we can still help you if your problem can be addressed through the laws of England and Wales.

And how much does it cost?

Many of our clients are able to obtain Legal Aid and so they don’t pay anything for our work. This is particularly the case when social workers are involved with your children. In other family cases, you might qualify for Legal Aid for some or all of your fees.

Legal Aid is no longer available for divorce, except for certain situations, or for some issues concerning arrangements for children. If we cannot obtain Legal Aid for you, we will advise you on the likely costs involved at our first meeting. You will never receive a bill from us that we haven’t discussed with you first.

Remember, an initial telephone call costs nothing. If any fees are to be charged we will explain that to you from the start. We can arrange payment plans or fixed fees in some circumstances.

Unusual problem?

Life changes fast and we never know what tomorrow might bring. At BBNM Law our team makes sure that everyone’s skills are up to date and that we have recognition from specialist professional organisations like the Law Society and Resolution so that you can be confident in our work. Our solicitors never stop learning so that they know about any changes that happen in family law.
